On December 31 1989 U2 played the final date of the Lovetown tour, ending a two year world tour that had taken them from the Joshua Tree through the tour for Rattle and Hum. The band were spent, they knew they could no longer continue in the same fashion, writing the same kinds of songs.
At that final show Bono closed the night saying “It is time for us to go and dream it up all over again!”
The band travelled to Berlin and soon came 1992’s Achtung Baby – a dramatic shift of an album that showed brand new depth to songwriting and song. The accompanying tour, ZooTv , was an elaborately staged multimedia event was the realization of that dream and set the standard for all other tours to follow.“
