Quinte Film Alternative – Listen 2pm

QFA - $12.00 incl. tax + fees

This is a film to draw attention to a system as cruel as it is bureaucratically “efficient”. An immigrant Portuguese family is on the grim edge of poverty in London. The deaf daughter and the other two children are mistakenly apprehended by Social Services. Listen powerfully illustrates the UK’s fast moving process of adopting out children they take in “care”. Once adopted, they will not be returned. Errors are rarely acknowledged and corrected.

Provokes emotion as well as knowledge.

In the outskirts of London, Portuguese couple and parents of three, Bela and Jota, struggle to make ends meet. When a misunderstanding arises at school with their deaf daughter, the British social services grow concerned for the safety of their children. LISTEN portrays the tireless battle of these immigrant parents against the law to keep their family together.

Listen is a 2020 Portuguese drama film written and directed by Ana Rocha de Sousa that stars Lúcia Moniz and Sophia Myles. It was selected as the Portuguese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards

What it occasionally lacks in nuance, it makes up for by delivering a mighty punch to the rigidity of the adoption system.
