The Barra MacNeils

On The Bright Side

Wednesday, May 30 @ 7:30 p.m.

Price:  $55.75 + TF ticket service fee

The Barra MacNeils are touring this spring in support of their latest release On The Bright Side, an exquisite collection of everything their fans love. It’s an upbeat album, with fiddle tunes that you know will erupt into a flurry of step-dancing on stage. When Lucy sings the heart-wrenching Ribhinn Donn, whether or not you ‘have the Gaelic’, have a tissue handy. You’ll need it. The distinctive family harmonies; an array of rhythmic instruments weaving through and around various themes—some decidedly classical but then, suddenly, very traditional Cape Breton; the lads singing a cappella; a thoughtful solo gradually merging into a frenzied all-hands-on-deck medley … it exudes the passion and energy familiar to anyone who has ever experienced The Barra MacNeils stage show. For the unfamiliar, critical acclaim says it all:  “a treasure of the East Coast, rich with tradition and unmatched in ensemble performance.” …  “The Barra MacNeils capture the feeling of ‘close your eyes and you’re there’.” …  “They play what they like and folks like what they play.” … “Moments of beauty as well as raucous memories like this can linger forever.”

As always, the five MacNeil siblings—Lucy, Boyd, Stewart, Kyle and Sheumas—combine on a vast array of instruments including accordian, guitar, piano, fiddle, bodhran, mandolin, banjo, Celtic harp, tin whistles, bouzouki, flute … underpinned by the nimble-fingered Jamie Gatti on bass. If you’ve ever been wowed by their Christmas show, be prepared to have the wow factor raised exponentially as the band is unleashed from the strictures of the season. “Nothing but dumbstruck awe.” Don’t miss On The Bright Side with The Barra MacNeils!

Wanda Lavonne Jackson is an American singer, songwriter, pianist and guitarist who had success in the mid-1950s and 1960s as one of the first popular female rockabilly singers and a pioneering rock’n’roll artist. She is known to many as “The Queen of Rockabilly” & “The First Lady of Rockabilly!” Jackson mixed country music with fast-moving rockabilly, often recording them on opposite sides of a record. Her hit “Let’s Have A Party” is considered to be one of the very best recordings & performances of the genre!  As rockabilly declined in popularity in the mid-1960s, she moved to a successful career in mainstream country music with a string of hits between 1966 and 1973, including “Tears Will Be the Chaser for Your Wine”, “A Woman Lives for Love”, and “Fancy Satin Pillows.”

She had a resurgence in popularity in the 1980s among rockabilly revivalists in Europe and younger Americana fans.  In 2009, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an Early Influence.  Her iconic career has touched and influenced and inspired legends from Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, to contemporary rocker Jack White!

Shawn Hook

Friday, October 19 @ 7:30 p.m.

PL 1:  $54.02 including HST + TFSF

PL 2:  $34.02 including HST + TFSF

Canadian pop wunderkind Shawn Hook made his US debut in the late ’00s on the soundtracks of popular TV shows like Kyle XY and The Hills, but it wasn’t until 2015 that he scored his first stateside chart hit with “Sound of Your Heart.” Since then Hook has been busy – he signed with US label Hollywood Records later that year, and in 2016 he generated major buzz with the racy video for his single “Relapse.” In concert Hook is the real deal, melting hearts with his sultry croon and showing off his conservatory background on the piano while his backing band dials in impressive performances on bass, drums, and guitar. With his killer voice, spiffy style, and knack for heart-rending balladry, Shawn Hook is a serious pop force to be reckoned with, and he wins over legions of new fans every time he performs.
